Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano is only volcano in Costa Rica constantly active since it woke up after 400 years with the big 1968 eruption producing huge ash columns, explosions & glowing red lava almost every day. Arenal Volcano rises 1657 metres above sea level and overlooks Lake Arenal; both are part of Arenal Volcano National Park. Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica is one of the best known in Costa Rica. This almost perfect cone shaped giant is located in the province of Alajuela, about 4 hours to the north of San Jose. You can stay close to it in the town of La Fortuna or in one of the many hotels or resorts that line the road towards the National Park and mount Arenal.

The country's most active volcano, Arenal's eruptions are strombolian in type, being frequent but moderate and can be viewed without danger as long as the viewers are behind the safety perimeter. Arenal Volcano is by far the most active volcano in Costa Rica and one of the most actives in the world with daily small eruptions. This makes the area of Arenal and La Fortuna a fascinating tourist destination that attracts foreigners as well as residents of Costa Rica.

Irazu Volcano

It sent tephra and secondary mudflows into cultivated areas, caused at least 40 deaths, and destroyed 400 houses and some factories. The Irazu Volcano is an active volcano in Costa Rica, situated in the Cordillera Central close to the city of Cartago. There are five craters to observe in this desolate moon space, with the main crater measuring more than 3,450 across and over 1000 feet deep.

At Irazu Volcano there are several craters rimmed by gnarled, scorched trees, and lined with brilliantly colored rain fed mineral pools. The volcano's summit has several craters, one of which contains Diego de la Haya, a green crater lake of variable depth. It is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica.There are few inhabitants in this harsh environment, but two you should keep an eye out for are the aptly named Volcano Junco and Volcano Hummingbird. There is a small visitors center and displays explaining volcanism (if you are interested in how volcanoes work, there is an extensive visitors center and museum at Poás Volcano National Park).

Laguna Poco Sol Volcano

 Laguna Poco Sol If you want to travel to Laguna Poco Sol, Alajuela you will be mesmerized by green fields, rolling hills and beautiful panoramas of grassy pastures. This small city, unaffected by tourism, is located about an hour by car outside of San Jose, Costa Rica's capitol.

Near a Small city Alajuela you will discover Laguna Poco Sol Volcano. This quirky volcano has scientists questioning if it is really a volcano or just the product of a landslide. LLaguna Poco Sol is a 656 ft wide depression that is filled with a lake. Laguna Poco Sol sits surrounded by virgin forests and abandoned fields. The summit stands 2588 ft tall. The coordinates of this unusual volcano are: 10.32N, and 84.66E. Laguna Poco Sol Volcano sits surrounded by virgin forests and abandoned fields. The zone does boast thermal activity, first recorded in 1969, that can be witnessed by the boiling mud pots strewn across the terrain. The 3.5 acres that surround Laguna Poco Sol feature a waterfall, forest trails, fumaroles and a biological station named after the volcano.
