Drake Bay Volcanoes


Costa Rica has 112 volcanic formations. Among of them many are situated in Drake Bay. Among of 112 volcanoes seven is considered as active ones and cover the majority of Costa Rica territory. In the past years these volcanoes suddenly eruptions made huge destructions. Irazu volcanoes is the highest, Arenal is most active and poas has the second widest (diameter 1.5 kilometers) crater in the world. Stratovolcanoes are Costa Rica major volcanic peaks. The type of magma is thick, viscous, and so filled with gases that the erupting magma often blasts violently into the air, fuels by most Drake Bay volcanoes. In 1950's, these volcanoes were decided to be under protection. Many of them are within the National Parks.

Arenal Volcano is one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world. This is only volcano in Costa Rica constantly active since it woke up after 400 years with the big 1968 eruption producing huge ash columns, explosions & glowing red lava almost every day.
Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica have been at least 23 eruptions since 1723. The most recent was from 1963 to 1965. It sent tephra and secondary mudflows into cultivated areas, caused at least 40 deaths, and destroyed 400 houses and some factories.
Laguna Poco Sol is a 656 ft wide depression that is filled with a lake. Laguna Poco Sol sits surrounded by virgin forests and abandoned fields. The summit stands 2588 ft tall. The coordinates of this unusual volcano are: 10.32N, and 84.66E.

Miravalles Volcano is located in the Guanacaste mountain range 21miles outside of Liberia in an east-southeast direction surrounded bybeautiful pale sand beaches. This volcano stands 1969ft (600m) above sea level boasting a total height of 6654ft (2028m) and total area of 28,840 acres.
Poas Volcano, located in the National Park of the same name, is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. The volcano stands 8,884 feet high, and contains three craters. There are historical records of Poas volcano’s action that go as far back as 1828 , but the last known eruption happened in 1996.
Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, also known as the "Colossus of Guanacaste" sits inside a 14,083 hectares national park with the same name, just 25km outside of Liberia, which is touristically speaking the most important city in our Guanacaste province.
Turrialba VolcanoTurrialba Volcano
The last major eruptions of Turrialba Volcano were from 1864 to 1868. Of its three craters, the central one is the deepest and most active, presenting two conic structures with sulfuric steam and vapors. Located in southeast Costa Rica, Turrialba is a large, densely forested stratovolcano*. Three well-defined craters lie in the upper section of a broad summit depression.Turrialba has been quiet since a series of explosive eruptions in the 19th century that featured intermittent pyroclastic* flows. Fumarole* activity continues at the summit craters.

In 1963 the most serious eruption was occur of Irazu volcano. For two years Erupted clouds of smoke and ash kept shovering over San Jose and other parts. People had been walking with handkerchief. Every day 13 centimeters thickness layers of polders were being scraped on the roofs. Surrounding it Over 100 square kilometers of land ware affected. The latest eruption was on August 24th, 2000. It was in Arenal volcano. In this eruption one person died, two were severely hurt and 600 residents destroyed. The lists of the volcanoes are given below:
